Pool - Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Will my child be allowed in the deep end?

Answer: Children will be asked to take a swim test if they want to go into the deep end. If they pass the test, the lifeguards will record the child's name and they will be allowed in the deep end, which has one waterslide!

Question: When may the waterslide be used?

Answer: Swimmers must ask a lifeguard prior to using the waterslide. The guards are responsible for determining when it is safe for people to use the waterslides. For example, waterslides may not be used when there is only one guard on duty.

Question: Do I have to go in the water with my child?

Answer: If your child passes the swim test, you do not have to go into the water with your child. You can watch from the bleachers on the pool deck.

Question: How old do you have to be to swim without an adult at the pool?

Answer: Children 14 years old and older can swim without an adult if they present a school identification card.

Question: Can my swim team or club rent lanes for private use?

Answer: Yes! Contact Joyce Seamens at 301-565-0190 or e-mail [email protected]

Question: Are there locker rooms?

Answer: Yes! There are hot showers, bathrooms, hair dryers, and small and large lockers in the men's and women's locker rooms. Bring your own combination lock. We are not responsible for personal items brought to the pool.

Question: Are kickboards and noodles allowed in the pool?

Answer: Yes! Swimming aids are allowed, as long as the pool is not too crowded. The lifeguards reserve the right to clear the pool of noodles, etc, if the pool gets too crowded.

Question: How shallow is the shallow end?

Answer: The shallow end is over three feet, so very small children will need an adult in the pool with them.

Question: Can I use the aerobic equipment?

Answer: Adults, and not children, may use the aerobic equipment as long as it is not in use by an aerobics class.

Question: Who may use the Piney Branch Pool?

Answer: The pool is open to the public. There are no residency requirements. However, some fees are discounted for Takoma Park and Montgomery County residents.

Question: If I buy a child, senior or adult pass, can anyone in my family use it?

Answer: Pool passes may be used by other people as long as the following is true:

  • All swimmers are immediate family members and listed on the pass registration
  • Children may use any of the passes (child, adult or senior pass)/li>
  • Seniors may use a senior pass or adult pass/li>
  • Adults may only use an adult pass/li>

Question: Do you have towels for swimmers to use?

Answer: No, we do not supply towels. You must bring your own shower supplies and towels. We also recommend you bring a lock to secure your posessions in a locker while you're swimming. And, please do not bring valuables to the pool. We cannot be responsible for any losses.

Answer: No lessons may be taught at the pool unless the instructor is authorized by Joyce Seamens, the Pool Director. You are required to a Red Cross certification, proof of insurance and meet other requirements.
